Our Noisy City

All over Metro Vancouver, people are being shushed. People are buying condos over night clubs and then writing angry letters about the nightclub patrons making noise after last call. People in family restaurants are glaring at the patrons whose kids yell or whose babies cry and complaining to the managers. Bands are being hounded out of garages and basements and forced to rent expensive studio space just to practice for a local gig or a friend’s wedding. And people are having to buy already-trained dogs at great expense because they get too much guff while they teach their puppy how to keep it down.

We are proud of Surrey because that is not how we do things here. While it is important to make sure people don’t take out power tools too early in the morning and other common sense things to make sure we can all get a good night’s sleep, there has to be balance. Surrey has always been the city of crying babies, barking dogs and garage bands. But that is coming under threat as our dwellings get closer together and new people move here from other parts of Metro Vancouver who don’t understand our local culture.

Proudly Surrey will defend and enhance our city’s unique noise culture and make sure this remains a good place to train your dog, parent your kids and practice your guitar.

We will establish regional noise bylaws based on the character of specific neighbourhoods; no more “one size fits all” noise policy so that Central City and Morgan Creek have noise policies that fit local community needs and priorities

We will reform the noise complaint process with the RCMP, creating a dedicated line just for noise complaints and maintain files on residents so as to track habitual offenders and habitual complainants to better target our limited police resources

We will support and expand our city’s summer concerts and festival events year-round

We will support the building of a studio practice space for local musicians as part of our Arts Centre Expansion program to be run by a non-profit society operating at a break-even point
